Police: Man gets photo ID, steals car

LAVAL, Quebec, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Police in Quebec said a thief who took a Mercedes from a gym parking lot was photographed for a membership ID and caught on camera taking the car keys.

Laval police said the thief used a fake name to sign up for a weeklong membership at the Tennis 13 fitness center and had his picture taken for an ID before he followed a member into the locker room and took the man's wallet, cellphone and Mercedes C300 keys from his locker, The (Montreal) Gazette reported Friday.

Investigators said the man was caught on a security camera during the Dec. 29 incident, waiting to be alone in the locker room. Signs are posted in the area informing members of the security cameras, but the man seemed unaware he was being filmed, police said.

The man, described as white and between 30 and 35 years old, left in the Mercedes, police said. Authorities are still looking for him.
