AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A Texas girl who read about a 10-year-old and his needy family in the newspaper says she decided to empty her piggy bank to buy clothes for the other child.

Alexis Lilley, a fifth-grader at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, said she read about fellow 10-year-old Richmond Kennedy, brother Senecca, 18, and mom, Stacey Kennedy, 47, in an Austin American-Statesman Season for Caring profile and her mother, Natasha Davison, said the girl immediately wanted to help, the American-Statesman reported Tuesday.

Lilley took the $85 from her piggy bank and, with a matching donation from her mother, bought clothes for Richmond Kennedy at Target. They also bought him toys for his new cat.

The girl said she wanted to help the boy because she read about how he and his family had been homeless on and off for two years.

"She felt really good about it," Davison said. "She's a real sweetie pie."
