ABRIDGE, England, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- English police said a house rented from a high-ranking police official was being used by a marijuana growing operation.

Rod Jarman, a Scotland Yard deputy assistant commissioner, said the Abridge, England, home was rented out through an online agent to a man with a Chinese or Vietnamese name, The Daily Mirror reported Monday.

Jarman said he discovered the operation when a neighbor called in a report of a strange noise at the residence. He said it appeared the house, which contained thousands of pounds of marijuana plants, appeared to have been burglarized by rivals.

"Despite 31 years' experience of policing I didn't see it coming," Jarman said. "It is an absolutely awful thing for people to find their home has been destroyed for somebody else's illegal gain."
