UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The United Nations acknowledged Wednesday it has been battling bedbugs in furniture at its New York headquarters for months.

The organization is in distinguished company, the New York Post reports. New York institutions with bedbug problems include Carnegie Hall, which announced its infestation this week, the Empire State Building, the Metropolitan Opera House and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

The U.N. secretary-general's office said the critters were first discovered in May 2009 in one building. Officials believed fumigation -- bombing the air in the building with insecticide -- had solved the problem but learned months later some furniture still had bedbugs.

The infested furniture has been moved to a vacant area for additional fumigation.
