EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Parents of pupils at Washington Elementary School in Evanston, Ill., say they're raising funds to help a veteran crossing guard stave off homelessness.

Parents said Deborah Clark, 50, has served as a crossing guard for 20 years and they are repaying her by raising money and helping her look for affordable housing, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Clark said she may lose her apartment of 12 years at the end of November.

"She's just everything to us as a community, to know that our children are getting across that street safe," said parent Debbie Klein.

A fundraising potluck dinner for Clark has been scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston.
