LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The National Weather service says a heat wave in southern California was so intense it caused the service's Los Angeles thermometer to fail.

Weather service meteorologist Ryan Kittell said Monday's record 113-degree heat caused an electrical component at the station, located on the University of Southern California campus, about 1 p.m. and the thermometer shut down completely about 3 p.m., the Los Angeles Times reported.

The thermometer was back up and running by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Kittell said.

The weather service said the station recorded the temperature at 99 degrees Tuesday, while temperatures across the region remained in the high 90s and low 100s.
