BETHESDA, Md., April 3 (UPI) -- Police in two Maryland cities near Washington said they were looking for whoever stole coins from scores of parking meters this week.

In all, 69 meters were cracked between Sunday and Thursday in Bethesda and Silver Spring, The Washington Post reported Saturday. The thief -- or thieves -- used a heavy object to smash the outer casings of the meters to get to the coin cans inside, police in Montgomery County said.

There was no word on how much money was taken but the cost of repairing or replacing the meters could be close to $15,000, the newspaper said.

Police said they had no description of suspects but they were asking citizens to report people "with unexplained large amounts of coins."
