ATLANTA, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Police in Atlanta said a bank robber explained to a teller that he was behind on mortgage payments and wished the worker a "Merry Christmas."

Officer James Polite, a police spokesman, said the suspect, described as an African-American man in his late 40s or early 50s, was carrying a box wrapped in electrical tape Thursday when he walked into the Sun Trust Bank and handed a note to a teller, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

"Give me the money ... I need to pay my mortgage ... Merry Christmas," the note read.

Polite said the man told the worker he was carrying an explosive device in the box that could be detonated via cell phone.

The man fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
