LACROSSE, Wis., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin couple said their wedding was made unforgettable when the groom and a photographer rescued a girl and her grandfather from the Mississippi River.

Adam Hatfield, 28, and his new wife Julie, 27, were posing for photos in a La Crosse, Wis., park prior to their Friday wedding ceremony when they heard a man shouting and turned to see him jump over a wall into the water, the La Crosse Tribune reported Tuesday.

Hatfield and photographer Russ Konrad ran to the water and saw the man treading water with a young girl in his arms. Hatfield and Konrad first pulled the girl from the water, and then the man, who told the men he was the girl's grandfather, the Tribune said.

Hatfield said the incident didn't really sink in until after the ceremony.

"We were kind of on a strict time schedule," he said. "These people are OK. We've got to be on time to our wedding."

Konrad said the Hatfield wedding was a unique job for him.

"I've never had to save anybody's life during a wedding before," he said.
