NEW YORK, July 29 (UPI) -- Eight people named "John Doe" are on voter registration rolls in the state of New York, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said one John Doe, formerly Jang Do, unwittingly changed his name to what is considered to be an obvious pseudonym when he arrived in the United States from Korea at the age of 11.

The 40-year-old software programmer said he sometimes refers to himself as "John H. (for Hyun) Doe, as he likes "to give myself a little character."

John H. Doe said he is always detained at airports, regarded with suspicion by landlords and potential dates, and often must produce his identification cards to prove he truly is John Doe.

John H. Doe is not the only one to have encountered such difficulties: John Doe of Alpharetta, Ga., who died in 2006, had reported medical personnel constantly peeked in on him while he was hospitalized, expecting to find a celebrity convalescing incognito, the Times said.
