SAGINAW, Mich., July 13 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan said a man who allegedly tried to rob a bank was arrested while trying to hitch a ride with an undercover officer.

Investigators said Mark White, 50, waved down Saginaw Township Detective Scott Jackson of the auto theft division Wednesday about two blocks from the Citizen's Bank location he allegedly tried to rob approximately five minutes earlier, the Saginaw News reported Monday.

Jackson slowed his car to allow patrol officer Ian Wegner to catch up and provide backup and White allegedly tried to flee after Jackson identified himself as police. Wegner chased down and apprehended White, who had been released from prison just over three weeks earlier on a 15-month to 10-year sentence for a third offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and violating a previous parole.

White was charged with bank robbery, making a false bomb threat, attempted carjacking, assault with intent to commit a felony and assault and resisting a police officer. He was taken to the Saginaw County Jail in lieu of $755,000 bond.
