JONKOPING, Sweden, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A manger scene in Jonkoping, Sweden, has lost its baby Jesus for a second time this holiday season after vandals stole the statue again, an official says.

Manger committee head Curt Ankarberg said while the infant Jesus statue was initially recovered in time for Christmas after disappearing last week, it soon vanished again the day after the holiday, The Local reported Saturday.

Ankarberg said, according to a witness, two boys stole the baby Jesus Friday and promptly threw the religious statue into a nearby canal.

"We were so happy that the baby Jesus was back before Christmas Eve, but on Friday night a witness saw how two boys came and took the child and threw it in the canal," he said.

While committee members have not officially ruled out rescuing the Jesus statue from its new watery location, Ankarberg expressed about what condition it might be in.
