AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Adolf Hitler isn’t working out as a pitchman for a New Zealand pizza chain and is being pulled from billboards nationwide.

The aptly named Hell pizza chain replaced the fuhrer's image with a quote by Pope Benedict saying, “Hell is real and eternal.”

"We hoped we could get away with people seeing Hitler with a piece of pizza would be funny," the head of the ad campaign, Kirk MacGibbon, told New Zealand’s Dominion Post. “If people are not seeing it as lampooning, we are dealing with a slightly different animal and we will back down."

Hell’s campaign is based on quotes related to heaven and hell uttered by famous -- and infamous -- historical figures.

Hitler was splashed on the billboards with his right arm raised in a Nazi salute, but holding a slice of delicious Hell pizza in his hand. His quote was: “It is possible to make people believe that heaven is hell," which probably did not originally pertain to pizza.
