SEATTLE, July 17 (UPI) -- Three participants in the Seattle Naked Bike Ride got an unpleasant surprise this year when they were arrested.

Another 54 nude riders finished the course Saturday, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. Those arrested included one woman who was wearing a coat of paint in tiger stripes and nothing else.

Daniel Johnson, who has been organizing naked bike rides in Seattle since 2003, said the problem was a "communications failure." The rides in Seattle and other cities are in part a protest against pollution and are also aimed at educating the public on bicycling and on the beauty of the unclothed human body.

"Seattle has never had a problem with this ride," Johnson said.

Police said they had received several complaints about the nudity, including one from the family of a 12-year-old girl.

"In the state of Washington, it's not illegal to be nude, per se," said Dewey Potter, a spokesman for the parks department. "What's illegal is to provoke someone or upset them in some way."
