CHICAGO, July 15 (UPI) -- An Illinois man set the official world record for stationary cycling this weekend when he completed 111 straight hours on one of the exercise bikes.

George Wood of Aurora, Ill., not only managed to reach the previous world record of 83 hours on the exercise cycle, but continued to pedal his heart out until he extended it to 111 consecutive hours, Chicago's WLS-TV reported Sunday.

A Guinness World Records official confirmed Wood broke the record Friday and was on hand Saturday night when an exhausted Wood finally stopped pedaling.

Wood began his unusual effort Wednesday and told observers he would continue pedaling until he reached 111 hours.

The TV station reported Wood also set a world record for spinning in January, but the record was deemed unofficial due to a bookkeeping error.
