CHERTSEY, England, March 6 (UPI) -- A driver speeding on a rain-slicked road near London crashed a rented $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron into another car.

The crash could have been one of the most expensive ever, The Sun said. The Veyron retails for 830,000 pounds, about $1.5 million.

The driver, who was believed to be doing about 100 mph, hit a Vauxhall Astra near Chertsey, Surrey, and then went up a three-foot bank into trees. A pregnant woman in the Vauxhall was hospitalized for tests and released, The Times of London said.

"It was clearly an almighty bang," a witness told The Sun. "Bits of Bugatti were strewn all over the road. The front had been virtually ripped off, every panel was damaged and the front wheels were pointing in opposite directions."

The Bugatti was being driven by a woman who reportedly paid 20,000 pounds -- almost $40,000 -- for a one-day rental. The owner of the Bugatti told the newspaper he paid a substantial premium for speedy delivery.

The car is manufactured by Bugatti Automobiles in Molsheim in the French province of Alsace.
