LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Lee's Summit, Mo., businessman has revealed himself as the mysterious gift-giver who anonymously distributed money to the poor in U.S. cities for 26 years.

Larry Stewart estimates he has handed out $1.3 million in $100 gifts to the needy since beginning his annual holiday tradition in 1980, USA Today reported Thursday.

Stewart said he chose to reveal himself after discovering that a tabloid newspaper planned to out him in an upcoming issue and not because of his ailing health. The businessman has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer that has metastasized to his liver. The millionaire said he is no stranger to poverty, having been raised by his grandparents. He said his Christmas tradition was inspired by a diner owner who once gave him a $20 bill when he couldn't afford to pay for his breakfast.

While Stewart's method of charity is not tax deductible, he said it is not without rewards.

"I see the smiles and looks of hopelessness turn to looks of hope in an instant," he says. "After all, isn't that what we were put here on Earth for -- to help one another?"
