LONDON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A U.S. wine connoisseur purchased a 1787 vintage sauterne from Chateau Yquem for $100,000 at a London wine auction, the auction house announced Friday.

The amount is believed to be the most ever paid for a bottle of wine.

Antique Wine Co. Managing Director Stephen Williams declined to identify the purchaser but said he is a longstanding client.

Williams said the Chateau Yquem sauterne is a sweet wine capable of maturing for many years, "even centuries."

Williams said Antique Wine acquired the bottle from a private collector in France.
