HOUSTON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Houston firefighter Beda Kent scored 104 out of 110 on a test to be promoted to captain just 12 hours after giving birth to a baby girl.

On just 2 1/2 hours of sleep, Kent scored 15th out of the 360 firefighters taking a test Jan. 11 to become a captain on the Houston Fire Department, the Houston Chronicle reports.

District Chief Jack Williams said despite Kent's situation he couldn't change the policy that forces all who take the examination at the same time to avoid cheating and accusations of unfairness.

He said a firefighter hurt on duty was unable to take the test and would have to wait until another round was offered -- usually when there is a vacancy.

Kent, a 12-year veteran of the force, gave birth to 7 1/2-pound Brina Sue at 9 p.m. Jan. 10.

With Motrin in hand, she was at the George R. Brown Convention Center at 9 o'clock the next morning to take the test.

Although Brina Sue stayed at the hospital for the mandatory 48 hour-observation, Kent lost her hospital room when she left for the test.

Even though the preliminary grading showed her 15th among those taking the test, Kent will have to wait until the results are certified to see if she won her promotion.

She said the force should make exceptions for certain situations like hers.
