NEWBURYPORT, Mass., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A young man assigned to clean up a historic Massachusetts cemetery as part of a community service sentence got into more trouble when he posed with a skull.

Police in Newburyport say they learned of the desecration when someone sent a snapshot of 19-year-old Neil Goodwin holding the skull on his shoulder, the Boston Globe reported.

Goodwin allegedly broke into a tomb bearing the inscription "Pierce 1863" and twisted apart a skeleton.

Lt. Richard Siemasko told the Merrimack River Current the body was partially mummified and one eyeball on the skull is still visible.

"I really thought I had seen it all, but this is sick," Siemasko said.

A local historian said the body may be that of William Balch Pierce. The remains have been turned over to a crime scene cleanup company, which will return them to the tomb.

Goodwin, already on probation for breaking into an ice cream store and an apartment building, now faces additional charges.
