BATON ROUGE, La., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Alice Bolton got her first phone line since moving into Louisiana's national forest in 1959, with the first call coming from her governor.

But when Gov. Kathleen Blanco tried to call, the line already was busy, The Town Talk of Alexandria, La., reported.

"I was wondering if telemarketers had already gotten to you," Blanco said.

The 89-year-old was one of several residents of the Natchitoches Parish community of Mink, deep in Louisiana's Kisatchie National Forest, who is receiving phone service for the first time. Members of the community began petitioning to get phone lines installed in 1970, but said they never heard back from phone companies.

Blanco said she thought Bolton had "done miracles, surviving all of that," and joined Bolton in thanking Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell for getting BellSouth to extend service into Mink.

She also commended Campbell for his work establishing a do-not-call program in the state.

"If you don't want telemarketers bothering you, be sure you get your line blocked before they start," Blanco told Bolten with a laugh.
