Joel Holland of Puyallup won the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin contest in Half Moon Bay with a monster that measured 13 feet in circumference and required a fork lift to load aboard his pickup truck.

The pumpkin weighted 69 pounds more than the second-place entry grown by Jack LaRue of Tenino, Wash.

Holland told UPI by phone that Washington had some good growing weather this summer, which he supplemented with fish fertilizer, sea weed and calcium.

The vine holding the hand-pollinated pumpkin was kept carefully pruned and the perseverance paid off in the form of a $6,145 first prize.

Eight entries weighed more than 1,000 pounds -- and all will be on display next weekend at Half Moon Bay's annual Arts and Pumpkin Festival.

Sally Hershberger jeans to cost $1,000

NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. hairstylist Sally Hershberger, who gave Meg Ryan her sexy, shaggy hairdo for the film "French Kiss," has developed Shagg Downtown jeans costing $1,000.

"I have been reconstructing vintage jeans forever," said Hershberger, whose other celebrity clients include Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer. "I've spent $2,000 on a pair of jeans that were 'bedazzled' at Fred Segal."

There will be four styles of the jeans, scheduled to hit stores in November and be available in New York City at Jeffrey and Barneys this January. But a cheaper version costing $150 to $300 will be available in Japan, reported the New York Post Monday.

The dark tight-fitted jeans with gold zippers up the legs are designed to look "really fitted, casual and street," said Hershberger, adding, "I might make the zipper 14 karat gold or put a diamond on the button."

Two teenagers, identified by police as active duty soldiers at nearby Fort Sam Houston, were arrested Sunday evening for having sex at the Alamo, WOAI-AM, San Antonio, reported.

A police report said the 18-year old woman and 19-year old man, both assigned to an Army medical battalion, were naked from the waist down when tourists spotted them having sex at the former fort.

Several visitors observing the activity reported it to authorities, who then charged the couple with public lewdness.

San Francisco Zoo gets two grizzlies

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- After 13 years without any grizzly bears, the San Francisco Zoo now has two 18-month-old females, the Chronicle reported Monday.

The sisters, orphaned after their mother had to be killed because of confrontations with humans, were scheduled to be euthanized by Montana authorities after becoming too aggressive in the wild.

For the next two months, the 150-some pound bears will be head kept inside a new $1 million concrete quarantine building adjacent to the animal hospital, behind the new African savanna exhibit and in full view of the giraffes.

Only the zoo's veterinarian, three veterinary technicians and three food and custodial workers will be allowed inside triple-locked building during the quarantine.

To enter, zoo workers must pass through an airlock, enter into a "clean" room and change into special coveralls and a mask. After cleaning the bears' cages, workers must shower, shampoo, wash their hands with antimicrobial soap and walk through a basin full of shoe disinfectant.
