Much ado over Australian crudity

ADELAIDE, Australia, March 25 (UPI) -- The speaker of South Australia's state parliament has apologized for an angry, and sexist remark.

In response to repeated and increasingly loud interruptions during question time, Speaker Peter Lewis reprimanded the House by telling members they had "more balls than brains," which immediately drew protests, the BBC reported.

"That clearly does not apply to a number of members of this chamber," retorted opposition member Joan Hall.

An angry Lewis refused to acknowledge her protest, so she made a point of protesting again.

Under parliamentary procedure, Lewis "named," or cited her, which normally means a suspension from the chamber.

However, legislators from both sides overruled him, leading him to apologize for his remark, somewhat reluctantly.

"Nonetheless, I was trying to get all honorable members to see the silliness of their behavior," he said.
