NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Ubiquitous PowerPoint presentations spread information but in a way that may render recipients worse off for the experience, The New York Times said.

In a Sunday New York Times Magazine piece, it was pointed out that a NASA panel investigating the Columbia space shuttle disaster went beyond its finding that the foam insulation was at fault to say the PowerPoint presentations to engineers during the mission were confusing.

A well known information theorist, Edward Tufte, this year claimed PowerPoint forces people to mutilate information beyond comprehension.

PowerPoint charts, he said, convey very few data points compared to those that appear in newspapers and places information in the context of a sales pitch that may not be appropriated.

Microsoft officials said fans of information density should realize audiences don't like it.
