NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Police Saturday removed a 400-pound Bengal tiger and a 3-foot-long, 280-pound reptile from an apartment in New York City's Harlem neighborhood.

The 21-story building was evacuated after the tiger was discovered, CNN reported. Authorities at that time didn't even know about the caiman, a crocodile-like creature, that was in the same apartment.

The tiger was sedated with tranquilizer darts and taken to an animal shelter, officials said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said authorities were tipped off by the tiger's owner, Antoine Yates, who showed up at a hospital after having been mauled by his "pet."

Yates' neighbors said they did not know he was keeping the big cat in their building and police speculated he may have raised it from a cub.

Kelly said Yates will most likely face charges of reckless endangerment. However, the case remained under investigation.
