CONSUMERS GET NEW BARBIE CHOICES

To coincide with the release of the new "Legally Blonde" movie, Mattel is presenting a new Barbie. The company says it's working with MGM on a promotion timed with the new movie, "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde," that will pay homage to the main character, Elle Woods.

In the latest movie Woods is a rising young lawyer ready to battle animal testing as she goes to Capitol Hill to make her career.

Mattel says, tongue in cheek, that "when Barbie saw the first 'Blonde' movie she was thrilled with the positive message it sent to young girls about believing in their dreams and achieving goals they set for themselves."

Along with the creation of the movie-themed Barbie, the dollmaker is giving a major donation to the Children's Defense Fund, which promotes and protects children's health, education and welfare.

The star of the new movie, Reese Witherspoon, is a supporter of the group and is involved in the Barbie promotion. The new doll likely will become quite a collectible. The first Barbie was sold in 1959.

WENDY'S IS ON THE HEISMAN TRAIL

Wendy's says it's kicking off its 10th annual push to find high school sports standouts worthy of a "Junior Heisman." Based in Ohio, Wendy's first came up with the High School Heisman concept a decade ago when founder Dave Thomas was still alive and backed the concept.

During the past decade the Heisman Memorial Trust, presenters of the annual college player award, and a national group of high school principals have assisted the burger chain in judging the contest.

Wendy's says information will be available nationally in the coming days and packets are being mailed to officials at more than 23,000 high schools.

The promotion is not only formatted to honor excellent players in more than 30 sports, but also student athletes who give something back to their communities.
