Today is Feb. 9.

The man who invented the jazz technique known as the "walking bass line" was born this day in 1900 in Gallatin, Mo. Bass player Walter Page was a member of Count Basie's first rhythm section from 1935 to 1943, right after Basie took over the former Bennie Moten band in Kansas City.

It was a willing role reversal as Page moved from leader to sideman. Basie had been a member of Walter Page's Blue Devils a decade earlier, from 1925 to 1931. Page died in New York in 1954.
