Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Israel Crosby, an early jazz virtuoso on the double bass, was born this day in Chicago in 1919. He worked in a series of jazz orchestra and studio settings, and spent eight years in pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio beginning in 1954.

Trumpeter Bubber Miley was born this day in Aiken, S.C., in 1903. With his growling horn style, Miley became a central figure in Duke Ellington's first band, helping shape the band's characteristic sound. He died in 1932 of tuberculosis.


Tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose was born this day in 1927 in Detroit. The onetime collaborator with Charles Mingus and Kenny Dorham died in 1994 in upstate New York, where he lived for many years.


Rhythm-and-blues influenced pianist Horace Parlan was born this day in 1931 in Pittsburgh.


Pianist Hod O'Brien was born this day in 1936 in Chicago. He attended the Manhattan School of Music but developed his chops by hanging around with New York's jazz greats. Bud Powell heavily influenced this bop-oriented player, an under-rated master of complex melodic lines.

On the New York jazz club scene... trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Village Vanguard for two more nights. There's a Three Tenor Saxophone Summit with Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano at Birdland tonight. Trumpeter Jim Rotondi's quintet is at Smoke. Singer-guitarist Diane Hubka is at Chez Suzette.

The Classical Jazz Quartet with Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Lewis Nash and Rufus Reid is at Iridium. Arturo Sandoval is at the Blue Note tonight, and Toru Yamoshita's Brazil 2003 is featured this afternoon in the East Meets West jazz brunch at the Blue Note. Pianist Randy Weston's African Rhythms Sextet featuring Regina Carter is at the Jazz Standard.

Trombonist Chris Washburne and his SYOTOS band bring Latin jazz to Smoke on the Upper West Side every Sunday night. West Coast singer Julie Kelly is at Danny's Skylight Room tonight with the Allen Farnham trio. The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band is at Birdland on Sunday nights.


"God Bless the Child," a Jerusalem-based humanitarian crusade to protect children in regions of conflict worldwide, brings its Humanitarian Jazz Awards program to New York this evening. In ceremonies at St. Peter's Church, it will honor representatives of The Heroes of 9/11, trumpeter Clark Terry and late founding member Lionel Hampton at the Annual Martin Luther King Birthday Service. Pastor Dale Lind, appointed by the Lutheran Church to shepherd the world Jazz flock, also will be honored at the special service.

The Mosaic Awards were hand-made by Israeli school children of different faiths and cultures. They express the children's "plea to those we look to as the guardians of our world to protect us and our dream of lives of joy." International Artists Conclave Artistic Director Arnie Lawrence will make the presentations.

The Legends of Jazz Orchestra is at The Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts in Philadelphia tonight.


Mark Gridley, Chuck Smolko and E.J. Parker are at Cleveland State University's Drinko Hall this afternoon as part of the Sundown Jazz series. Kelly Chapman is at Nighttown in Cleveland tonight.


In Chicago... the 10th annual Marshall Vente Jazz Fest winds down this afternoon at the Jazz Showcase with the Judy Roberts quartet with Greg Fishman, Marshall Vente and Project 9, and Billy Harper. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is at the McAnich Arts Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn tonight.

The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. Tim Green and Tim McNamara are at Katerina's this noon. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.

On the New Orleans jazz scene... New Orleans Street Beat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Earl Brown is at Cafe Sbisa. Heather and the Monkey King are at Cobalt. Warren Battiste & Friends are at El Matador. Big Sam's Funky Nation and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt.

Singer Kitty Margolis is at The Perth International Arts Festival-Freemantle Jazz Festival in Perth, Australia, tonight. It's western Australia's biggest jazz event.
