Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist Art Hodes was born this day in 1904 in the Ukraine. His family moved to Chicago when Hodes was 6 months old, and it was in Chicago that he spent much of his jazz career. He made his first recording in 1928 with trumpeter Wingy Manone, and also worked with Chicago traditionalists Frank Teschemacher and Bud Freeman.

Hodes was a prime exponent of stride and blues piano styles, which were richly displayed on a Muse album with Milt Hinton called "Just the Two of Us." At various stages, he also produced jazz television shows and published a fine jazz magazine. He died in March 1993 at age 88.


Pianist Don Ewell, a musical disciple of Jelly Roll Morton, was born this day in Baltimore, Md., in 1916. He came to the traditional jazz piano forefront in 1956 in Jack Teagarden's orchestra. Ewell died in 1983.

Pianist Ellis Marsalis, the patriarch of the musical Marsalis family, was born this day in New Orleans in 1934. He continues to perform after retiring as director of the jazz studies program at the University of New Orleans.

Singer Abbey Lincoln's quartet is at the Blue Note through Sunday in week two of the club's Fall Vocal Festival. Clark Terry's quintet is at the Village Vanguard.

Italian new-music pianist Emanuele Arciuli will present 23 variations on Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" tonight at Columbia University's Miller Theatre. Arciuli commissioned some of today's leading composers to write variations on Monk's most famous standard. Those composers include Eric Reed, Uri Caine, Alberto Barbero, Fred Hersch, Milton Babbitt, Aaron Jay Kernis, George Crumb and William Bolcom.

Pianist David Haney opens an extensive tour in central and western Argentina tonight to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the "Fotojazzeando" jazz performance series. He will be accompanied by local jazz musicians Jorge Hernaez on bass and Diego Chamy on drums at the Quintanilla Theater in Mendoza and at other stops over the next two weeks in and around San Rafael City in Argentina's wine country, as well as in Buenos Aires.
