Trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison was born this day in 1915 in Columbus, Ohio.

Pianist and composer Thelonious Sphere Monk was born this day in 1917 in Rocky Mount, N.C. The modern jazz pioneer helped develop bebop in the late 1940s and is best known for "'Round Midnight" and other jazz classics. He died in 1982.


Another Monk, bass player "Monk" Montgomery, was born this day in 1921 in Indianapolis. He was a brother of guitar legend Wes Montgomery.


Singer and pianist Roy Kral of the cabaret duo Jackie and Roy, was born this day in 1921 in Chicago. He died this year.


French horn player Julius Watkins was born this day in 1921 in Detroit. He was the first fluent bebop player on French horn, co-led the band Jazz Modes with Charlie Rouse and recorded with a veritable "who's who" in modern jazz.

Pianist Junior Mance was born this day in Chicago in 1928.

On the New York jazz scene... Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz at the Penthouse series presents "Caribbean Classics -- Pan Drums" tonight through Saturday featuring an ensemble led by David "Happy" Williams, with Othello Molineaux on pan drums at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.

Bassist Dave Holland's 13-piece big band is at Birdland through Saturday. Guitarist Jim Hall is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. The Arthur Blythe quartet is at the Jazz Standard this week. Iridium this week has the Sam Rivers trio and the Andrew Hill quartet.

Two duos... Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone plus Benny Green and Russell Malone... share the billing at the Blue Note this week. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe tonight. Diane Hubka is at Chez Suzette.


It's only fitting that a trumpeter, Ted Curson, hosts the monthly jam session at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.


On the Boston area jazz scene... the John Scofield band is at the Orpheum Theater in Boston tonight. Larry Coryell's trio featuring drummer Paul Wertico and bassist Buster Williams is at Scullers tonight and Friday. The Laszlo Gardony quartet is at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge tonight. The Teresa Ines quintet with special guest Claudio Ragazzi is at the Regattabar in Cambridge. Guitarist Scott Henderson brings his "Well To The Bone" blues-rock tour to Johnny D's in Somerville.
