Today is Sept. 18.
Tenor saxophonist Frank Socolow was born this day in 1923 in New York City. He worked in the 1940s big bands of Georgie Auld, Boyd Raeburn, Chubby Jackson and Artie Shaw, and led a bop quintet whose members included Freddie Webster and Bud Powell. Frank Socolow died in 1981.
Singer Teddi King was born this day in 1929 in Boston. After winning a vocal contest sponsored by Dinah Shore, she apprenticed with the George Shearing quintet before working as a solo performer. She had a warm, velvety way with a ballad. She died in 1977.
Guitarist Emily Remler was born this day in 1957 in New York City. Long before she fell under the musical spells of Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian and Pat Martino, she was inspired by rock guitarists Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix. Remler died in May 1990 while touring Australia.
On this day in 1943, a union-led two-year ban on instrumental recordings came to an end for most record companies after they agreed to pay royalties into a union fund for all records released. The Victor and Columbia labels would hold out against the agreement for another 12 months. The American Federation of Musicians recording ban protested the lack of a royalty system to compensate musicians for use of their recordings on radio programs and jukeboxes.
This also was the day in 1940 when trombonist Will Bradley's band recorded "Scrub Me, Mama, With a Boogie Beat." The song was a sequel to another Bradley hit, "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," that was released four months earlier.
On this day in 2001, the Verve label released singer-pianist Diana Krall's sixth recording, "The Look of Love," with all arrangements by Claus Ogerman.
