Another former Miles Davis sideman, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, was born this day in 1933 in Newark, N.J. Shorter was a key member of Davis's pivotal 1960's quintet.

Guitarist Pat Martino was born this day in 1944 in Philadelphia. After working in small groups with Philly area organ players and hot tenors, Martino made his recording debut at age 22 with "El Hombre" on the Prestige label. He quickly became one of the foremost modern jazz guitarists.

Serious illness sidelined Martino in 1980. He had a congenital brain aneurysm that erased his memory and playing skills. A series of new releases and extensive touring over the past seven years have shown Martino is back in fine form, much to the excitement of his legions of loyal listeners.
