Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Tenor saxophonist Corky Corcoran was born this day in 1924 in Tacoma, Wash. He was a soloist with the Harry James orchestra in the 1940s.

Singer Nnenna Freelon was born this day in 1956. Raised in Cambridge, Mass., this North Carolina-based singer has seen her career blossom since the mid-1990s.


On this day in 1936, a 19-year-old Nat Cole, not yet a king of jazz piano and pop vocals, made his first record with brother Eddie Cole's Solid Swingers for the Decca label. The tune was "Honey Hush."

The Knitting Factory features Sabir Mateen, Tatsuya Nakatani and Dave Reaboi tonight. Trombonist Chris Washburn's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke. The Jazz Gallery's "Sundays on the River: Explorations in Afro-Cu-Bop Sounds" features Ghanaian percussionist Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng and his KKO Band, and Cuban percussionist Dafnis Prieto and his ensemble this afternoon and evening on Pier 63 at the north end of Chelsea Piers.
