Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is July 28.

Tenor saxophonist Corky Corcoran was born this day in 1924 in Tacoma, Wash. He was a soloist with the Harry James orchestra in the 1940s.

Singer Nnenna Freelon was born this day in 1956. Raised in Cambridge, Mass., this North Carolina-based singer has seen her career blossom since the mid-1990s.

On this day in 1936, a 19-year-old Nat Cole, not yet a king of jazz piano and pop vocals, made his first record with brother Eddie Cole's Solid Swingers for the Decca label. The tune was "Honey Hush."

On the New York jazz scene... the Larry Willis trio is at the Village Vanguard. The Lonnie Smith trio featuring special guest James Carter is at the Jazz Standard this week. Henry Threadgill's Zooid is at Iridium through tonight and the Bob Dorough trio plays for the brunch crowd. Lalo Schifrin is at the Blue Note for a weeklong 70th birthday celebration.

The Knitting Factory features Sabir Mateen, Tatsuya Nakatani and Dave Reaboi tonight. Trombonist Chris Washburn's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke. The Jazz Gallery's "Sundays on the River: Explorations in Afro-Cu-Bop Sounds" features Ghanaian percussionist Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng and his KKO Band, and Cuban percussionist Dafnis Prieto and his ensemble this afternoon and evening on Pier 63 at the north end of Chelsea Piers.

Trumpeter Gary Wofsey's band is at the 4-H Fair in Somers, N.Y., this afternoon.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is at the Country Playhouse in Westport, Conn., tonight.

Will Downing, Gerald Albright and Patti Austin are at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., tonight.

Quetzal is at Nighttown in Cleveland tonight.

On the Chicago jazz scene... alto saxophonist Frank Morgan concludes his weeklong run tonight at the Jazz Showcase. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at

Pops for Champagne. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles, Ill., tonight.

In New Orleans... the Adonis Rose quartet is at Donna's tonight. Rick Trolsen is at Dos Jefes. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. Big Sam's Funky and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt tonight. Kermit Ruffins and the ReBirth Brass Band are at Joe's Cozy Corner. Dean Fransen and Larry Sieberth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Joe Krown is at the Maple Leaf for piano night. Dejan's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. The Dukes of Dixieland are aboard the Steamboat Natchez for the nightly dinner cruise.

On the California jazz scene... the John Pizzarelli trio is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. The Susie Hansen Latin Band, the Estrada Brothers and Leslie Paula perform today at the Oxnard Salsa Festival at Plaza Park. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton this afternoon. Pianist Danny Green is at Dizzy's in San Diego with Bill Caballero and Rob Thorsen tonight

The Joey DeFrancesco trio is at Yoshi's in Oakland. Sheryl Bailey's Night of Guitars is featured tonight at the Stanford Jazz Festival in Palo Alto tonight. In San Francisco, Kitty Margolis sings for the Bread and Roses Foundation at Laguna Honda Hospital, Kenny Barron and Brazilia are at the Stern Grove Music Festival and Don Asher is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club. The Rene Marie trio is at the Bach Dynamite and Dancing Society in Half Moon Bay this afternoon. The CARMA Big Band holds an open rehearsal tonight at the JazzSchool in Berkeley.
