Trumpeter Pete Candoli was born this day in 1923 in Mishawaka, Ind. He paid his dues as a high-note trumpeter in many big bands before moving to the West Coast in the early 1950s and mixing studio work with jazz club dates, often with his trumpet-playing younger brother Conte Candoli.

Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Rollini was born this day in 1904 in New York City. He was a prodigious talent who played a Chopin concert at age four. Yet he is better known for his fascination with offbeat instruments including the goofus, the hot fountain pen, the bass saxophone and the vibes. In the 1930s, Rollini pioneered the use of four mallets on the vibes, two generations before Gary Burton popularized the playing technique. Rollini died in 1956.

Arranger and tenor saxophonist Jimmy Mundy was born this day in 1907 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a staff arranger for Benny Goodman beginning in 1936 and arranged tunes for Gene Krupa, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. He led his own band briefly in the late 1930s.
