Trombonist and singer Dickie Wells was born this day in 1907 in Centerville, Tenn. He brought to jazz a bubbling sense of humor, using his horn to create a variety of voice-like sounds. He was spotlighted in the Count Basie Orchestra for eight years beginning in 1938.

Bass player Charnett Moffett, son of onetime Ornette Coleman collaborator Charles Moffett, was born this day in 1967 in New York.


On this day in 1946, Dizzy Gillespie's first big band recorded Tad Dameron's song "Our Delight."


Erskine Hawkins recorded "After Hours" on this day in 1940.
