Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trombonist and bandleader Buddy Morrow was born this day in 1919 in New Haven, Conn. By the time he was 14, Morrow was playing with local bands, including the Yale Collegians. In the late 1970s, he began leading Tommy Dorsey's ghost band.

Alto saxophonist Joe Maini was born this day in 1930 in Providence, R.I. His brief career was focused on the West Coast in the 1950s and 1960s. His best-recorded work was on two albums cut during a 1954 jam session with Clifford Brown and Max Roach. Maini died in 1964 at age 34 after losing a game of Russian roulette.


On this night in 2001, the Manhattan School of Music and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce honored Lionel Hampton and Ornette Coleman with the Harlem Jazz and Music Festival's first annual Legend Awards.

Norman Hedman's Tropique performs this evening at the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center for Earth and Space as part of its "Starry Nights: Friday Under the Sphere" series. The William Hooker quintet and Kokolo are at the Knitting Factory. Bassist Francis M'Bappe's Acoustic Project, featuring pianist James Hurt and percussionist Daniel Moreno, is at The Jazz Gallery tonight.


On the Boston jazz scene, fellow tenor saxophonist Harry Allen is featured with Scott Hamilton's quartet at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Trombonist and arranger Slide Hampton joins the Ryles Jazz Orchestra tonight at Ryles in Cambridge.


Trumpeter John Swana and alto saxophonist Jon Gordon team up tonight at Chris's Jazz Café in Philadelphia.


On the Ohio jazz scene, trumpeter Byron Stripling is featured with the Canton Symphony Orchestra tonight in a "Misbehavin' Tonight" concert at the Palace Theater in Canton. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band provides the music for the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company's performance of "When the Spirit Moves" at the State Theater in Cleveland.

Guitarist David Myles and Mylestones are featured tonight at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich.


On the Chicago jazz scene, Kim Cusak is at Andy's for the Jazz at Noon series while the Katherine Davis group is in the spotlight tonight. The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is at HotHouse. Pianist Lynne Arriale's trio is at the Jazz Showcase. Skinny Williams is featured tonight at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Jeff Newell quartet is at Pops for Champagne. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's in Oak Park.


In New Orleans tonight, singer Charmaine Neville is at Cobalt. The Potholes Brass Band is at Donna's Bar and Grill. Mark Braud is at Dos Jefes. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Devin Phillips' quartet is at the Funky Butt. Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos are at the Old Point. Pete Fountain dusts off his clarinet tonight at his longstanding club in the New Orleans Hilton.

Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at the Red Room. Leroy Jones leads the band at Preservation Hall. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. Wanda Rouzan and a Taste of New Orleans are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Bleu Orleans is at the Bottom Line. Billy Chapman is featured tonight at the Sunray Grill.
