Trumpeter and jazz educator Clark Terry was born this date in 1920 in St. Louis. Terry pioneered use of the deeper-sounding flugelhorn in jazz.

Baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne was born this day in 1922 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Like Serge Chaloff, Payne was also a pioneer in adapting the baritone horn to bebop and post-bop jazz.

Pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. was born this day in Memphis in 1931. He died in 1989.

Swing trombonist Dan Barrett was born this day in 1955 in Pasadena, Calif.

On this day in 1953, trumpeter and arranger Buck Clayton recorded the first of his famous jam session albums for Columbia. This Basie Band alumnus and his Swing Era colleagues played chorus after chorus on standard tunes. So long and so hard did they swing that they often filled a side with one tune.
