Dengue fever spreads in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, May 26 (UPI) -- More cases of Dengue fever were reported in the Yemeni province of Hodeida despite measures taken by the state to stop the epidemic, authorities said.

Yemen Fox said Saturday officials with the health ministry feared cases will mount in the poorest neighborhoods of Hodeida given the poor sanitation and high level of malnutrition.

Mareb Press quotes medical sources as saying on Saturday the state had failed to adequately respond to the growing epidemic "putting the lives of thousands of people at risk by a lack of oversight."

Dengue fever can be fatal if patients suffer from malnutrition or have a poor immune system.

Yemen Fox said al-Thawra hospital in Hodeida had registered over 50 new cases in less than a week, adding about 10 cases were being reported per day since last Monday.
