Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The United States Championship Tournament came to an end Tuesday on Smackdown Live as a new title holder was crowned in the final round.

Both semi-final matches followed by the final match took place on Smackdown starting with Jinder Mahal taking on Xavier Woods of The New Day.

Woods seemed to be gaining momentum when his New Day teammates Big E and Kofi Kingston were able to chase away Mahal's henchmen The Singh Brothers, however, Woods missed a crucial top-rope elbow drop which led to Mahal delivering the Khallas for the three count.

Bobby Roode took on Mojo Rawley in the second bout, a competitive match that ended with Roode delivering his Glorious DDT to gain the victory. It was then that the Singh Brothers rushed to the ring and attacked Roode before Mahal arrived to promise that he would become the next United States Champion next week.

Roode, wanting the final match of the tournament to take place then and there, got his wish when general manager Daniel Bryan came out and announced that the tournament would indeed come to an end in the main event of Smackdown Live.

The ensuing title match between The Glorious One and The Modern Day Maharaja, was viewed by Bryan and Smackdown commissioner Shane McMahon who stood by the United States Championship at ringside.

Bryan and McMahon then presented Roode with the championship belt after he was able to impressively reverse Mahal's Khallas into a Glorious DDT for the three count.

Other moments from Smackdown Live included WWE Champion AJ Styles addressing his upcoming Royal Rumble championship match against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn; Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin attacking Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos backstage following an interview; and Smackdown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair, Naomi and Becky Lynch teaming up to defeat The Riott Squad consisting of Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan.
