May 17 (UPI) -- CBS warns fans shouldn't expect to see miniature versions of other Big Bang Theory characters in its upcoming spinoff Young Sheldon.

The sitcom is the origins story of Jim Parsons' brilliant, but socially awkward Big Bang character Sheldon. Child actor Iain Armitage plays the title character, while Parsons narrates as the adult Sheldon.

"This is the story of Sheldon as a 9-year-old starting high school in Texas in 1989. This is a charming, single-camera show that still has a lot of laughs in it. But the tone is maybe a little bit more like The Wonder Years or Doogie Howser. It's not all the Big Bang kids. It's not Muppet Babies. They are not growing up [together] as little kids," Kelly Kahl, senior executive vice president for CBS Primetime, said at Wednesday's Upfront presentation.

Jon Favreau directed the pilot for the half-hour comedy, which co-stars Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord and Montana Jordan. Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro created the series and executive produce along with Parsons and Todd Spiewak.
