May 7 (UPI) -- Singer and actress Selena Gomez announced Sunday the renewal of the controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

"Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming," Gomez, who is an executive producer on the show, said in an Instagram post.

Directed by Tom McCarthy, the series is adapted from the young-adult novel by Jay Asher.

"It follows teenager Clay Jensen [played by Dylan Minnette] as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch," a Netflix summary explained. "Inside, he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker [played by newcomer Katherine Langford] -- his classmate and crush -- who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are 13 reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, 13 Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heart wrenching story of teenage life that will deeply affect viewers."

Some teen suicide experts have expressed concern that the makers of the wildly popular and critically lauded program, which contains graphic scenes of suicide and sexual violence, underestimated the complexity of these issues, adding they fear the show could encourage copycat gestures.
