LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Lorelei and Rory Gilmore are returning to the small screen for the first time in almost a decade in Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life special.

The series revival, which will be released on the streaming site Friday, consists of four 90-minute episodes, each set in a different season in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Ct.

The new episodes will see a return of Stars Hollow's beloved characters and give fans a chance to see what's happened in their lives since the series ended in 2007.

Alexis Bledel, who stars as Rory, said that the new episodes have allowed her character to have "closure" with her series love interests -- Dean, Jess, and Logan -- who have all returned for the revival.

"I think there is satisfying closure for any fans of any of the three couples that tend to get some attention," Bledel said. "But they're very different interactions. I would say each one of them [gets] closure in a different way."

Bledel also shared that the A Year in the Life will pick up with post-Yale Rory who is still trying to make a name for herself in the journalism field.

"She started her work as a journalist at the same time that newspapers were going away," Bledel said. "Her field changed dramatically as she was just kind of getting up and running. So that's where we pick up with her."

Lauren Graham, who played Lorelei, said while the new episodes fill in the blanks of the past nine years, they also set the stage for what's to come, especially in dealing with the loss of Gilmore patriarch Richard, who was played by the late Edward Herrmann.

"Everybody in real life and on the show is dealing with the loss of Ed, with Richard," Graham said. "I think it raises a question for the three women for sure, sort of encourages their journey of what next."

And that includes Lorelei's mother, Emily, who is known as much for her snark as her tailored attire.

Kelly Bishop, who plays Emily, said Richard's death is central to her character's storyline.

"Emily is dealing with widowhood and it's a huge part of the whole thing for her," Bishop said. "She has different adventures, some of them are funny, some of them are sad. She's just kind of plodding along trying to find herself, how she does it now, what it means."

Also returning for the new episodes are Lorelei's on again/off again boyfriend/fiance Luke Danes, played by Scott Patterson; best friend Sookie, played by Melissa McCarthy; and co-worker Michel, played by Yanic Truesdale.

Other returning co-stars include Jared Padalecki who plays Dean, Milo Ventimiglia who stars as Jess, Matt Czuchry, who stars as Logan and Liza Weil, who played Rory's frenemy Paris.

All four episodes will be available at once, a decision Netflix said was meant to make fans happy.

"If we would not have [released them] all at once the fans would've killed us," said Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos. "I'm petrified of those fans. They are so passionate." Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was hoping for a staggered release, mainly to preserve the show's famous last four words.

"It's such a journey and it's such a build to the last four words," she said.

The Four Words have taken on such a life of their own, the show even released a PSA ahead of the new episodes urging binge-watching fans not to spoil them.
