DENVER, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Bachelor alum Ben Higgins and fiancée Lauren Bushnell have put their relationship on pause.

The 28-year-old Season 20 star "blindsided" Bushnell by calling off their wedding on Tuesday's episode of Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?.

"I don't want us to rush it," Higgins told his bride-to-be. "I think making a commitment, like marrying somebody, involves knowing what you're getting into. There's still things that we need to know."

"I think this thing sped up real fast, and we haven't had a second to breathe," he added. "We both started to know each other. We were engaged. Like, it's weird. But now it's time not to rush anything else."

Higgins still intends to marry Bushnell but said he feels like there's too much "to figure out" to feel "comfortable" tying the knot at this point. The couple had revealed in October that they've been going to couples therapy.

"It was more preventative," Bushnell explained to E! News. "We want to have a really solid foundation."

"We want to address certain problems maybe before they even exist and just have that third party to help us through pre-marriage and engagement and being a new couple," she added.

Higgins and Bushnell met on The Bachelor and got engaged on the Season 20 finale. The couple now star on Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?, which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
