AMC reveals premiere date, new poster for 'Preacher'

LOS ANGELES, March 14 (UPI) -- AMC's upcoming television adaption of the hit graphic novel series Preacher, will premiere on May 22 the network announced Monday.

Revealed during the South by Southwest film festival, the supernatural drama starring Dominic Cooper will debut behind the mid-season finale of Fear the Walking Dead.

Following the premiere date, Preacher's pilot episode will air again the following weekend including back-to-back airings on May 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

AMC also revealed a new promotional image for the series featuring a shadowed Cooper smoking a cigarette donning a preacher's signature clerical collar. "Series premiere Sunday, May 22. #PREACHER," the network tweeted alongside the image on Preacher's official Twitter account.

Executive produced by comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End, Superbad, Neighbors), Preacher is based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillion.

The show follows Jesse Custer (Cooper) -- a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town, who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Custer is joined by his ex-girlfriend Tulip played by Ruth Negga and Cassidy, an Irish vampire played by Joseph Gilgun. Together the three characters team-up in order to find God.

The first trailer for Preacher was released back in November and featured Custer handing out his violent version of justice.
