SAN DIEGO, July 18 (UPI) -- WGN America says it has ordered a third season of its original series Salem.

From Fox 21 Television Studios -- and creator-writers Brannon Braga and Adam Simon -- the small-screen drama reimagines the infamous, 17th-century witch trials in colonial Massachusetts in a world where witches are real, but are not who or what they seem to be, a synopsis said.

The third season will begin production in Shreveport, La., later this year for a 2016 premiere. The series stars Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Lucy Lawless, Janet Montgomery, Seth Gabel, Tamzin Merchant, Ashley Madekwe, Elise Eberle and Iddo Goldberg.

Nick Copus directs the program and serves as its co-executive producer.
