Edward James Olmos joins 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' cast

Olmos will play Robert Gonzales, whose debut this spring in the show will have "massive repercussions for Director Coulson and his team," a synopsis said.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Edward James Olmos has joined the cast of ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel announced Thursday.

Olmos will play Robert Gonzales, whose debut on the show this spring will have "massive repercussions for [Clark Gregg's character] Director Coulson and his team," a synopsis said.

"Edward James Olmos brings an amazing gravitas to any role he inhabits, something we knew we needed for Robert Gonzales," the show's executive producer and head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said in a statement. "When Olmos first appears on our series, everyone will have to take notice -- including our favorite Agents."

Best known for his roles in Battlestar Galactica and Blade Runner, Olmos twice won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for TV with his work on Miami Vice and The Burning Season. In addition, Olmos earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role with Stand and Deliver.
