'After Earth' dubbed worst film of 2013

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The sci-fi flop "After Earth" starring U.S. actor Will Smith and his son, Jaden, has been crowned the worst movie of 2013 by the film site Rifftrax.com.

More than 40,000 viewers of the site voted for "After Earth." Recalling the film "Battlefield Earth" starring John Travolta, another epic disaster, the site's authors wrote: "In 2000, John Travolta laid down the challenge: 'You will never, EVER make a big budget sci-fi vanity project with a two-word title, the second word being 'Earth,' as colossally awful as the one I have made.' Thirteen years later Will Smith beat his challenge."

Their list was revealed on NBC Friday morning.

Second place was the SyFy channel's television movie "Sharknado."

"Admit it, when you saw the title you assumed it was a tender coming of age story set in Belgium in 1943 about a young Protestant boy who falls in love with a Jewish girl," the Riffers wrote. "But, no. It's about a tornado filled with sharks."

Rounding out the list was: "Grown Ups 2," "Movie 43," "Iron Man 3," "Scary Movie 5," "A Good Day to Die Hard," "R.I.P.D.," "Man of Steel" and "Lone Ranger."
