HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Fox has renewed the animated comedy "The Simpsons" for a 26th season, said Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment at the U.S. network.

The news came Friday, just days after the series rated No. 1 on Sunday night in the key 18-49 demographic, up 12 percent from last year's average, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"This groundbreaking series is not only the longest-running scripted show in television history, it 's one of the greatest sitcoms of our time, and I 'm looking forward to yet another landmark season."

The show received an Academy Award nomination in 2012 for the short film "The Longest Daycare."
