LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo" took the top movie prizes Sunday at Writers Guild of America awards ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
Mark Boal won for best original screenplay for "Zero Dark Thirty," an account of the global manhunt for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. Chris Terrio won for "Argo," based in part on "The Master of Disguise" by Antonio J. Mendez and on "The Great Escape," an article by Joshuah Bearman that was published in Wired magazine.
Both screenplays are nominated for Academy Awards.
Malik Bendjelloul won for best documentary for "Searching for Sugar Man," the story of a filmmaker's quest to find a long forgotten Detroit singer-songwriter.
"Breaking Bad" won the top prize for television drama, and comedian Louis C.K.'s FX series, "Louie" won for best comedy series.
Lena Dunham's new HBO comedy "Girls" won for best new series.
History Channel's "Hatfields & McCoys" won for best original television long form writing and HBO's "Game Change" won for best adapted television long form.
The IFC series "Portlandia" took the prize for comedy/variety series and "The 66th Annual Tony Awards" won for best comedy/variety special.
"The Simpsons" won for TV animation.
