TEL AVIV, Israel, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Yaffa Yarkoni, a singer who entertained generations of Israeli troops over the years, died Sunday at the age of 86, hospital officials said.
Yarkoni died at a Tel Aviv hospital after struggling with Alzheimer's Disease for several years.
No funeral date was announced; however, Yarkoni will be laid to rest in Kiryat Cemetery next to her late husband, Sheike.
Yarkoni was nicknamed the War Singer in Israel for her frequent performances for the Israeli Defense Forces. She began singing for the troops during Israel's war for independence in 1948 while a member of an army band.
Her career also included the hit "Green Eyes" and a 1990s children's television show which she hosted along with her son-in-law, Meir Swisa.
